Overview

January - March 2016

During my senior year of high school, I was asked to join the Interact District 5300's board as A7 Director. One of my responsibilities was to organize a large-scale Interact event with area’s officers. Based off of Rowland High School's 50th Jubilee and NorCal’s D5170 A2 Bloom, Ignite was created with the purpose of sparking a change throughout the area.

Reflection

Planning this event was extremely exciting because I was able to pioneer a new event for District 5300. Many learning opportunities came out of this experience. If I were to recreate this event, two things I would do differently is find an advisor who has experience with charity events and increase awareness about the event.

First of all, because District 5300 was a new idea to the Walnut Valley Rotary Club, they were learning how to support us as we were building up this District. Although I received help from a couple of Rotarians, I had to rely on my area Presidents for help, who also did not have experience either.

Secondly, the problem with hosting the event in West Covina was that it was about 10-15 minutes from each school in our area. Therefore, although we had many members volunteer, we had a low attendance rate. If we also market the event to neighboring schools (elementary-high school) as well as the neighborhoods around the park, we can increase the attendance rate significantly. With little people actually coming to the event, many of our food and prize donations were not shared with anyone. By increasing our target market and using different streams of marketing, this event has the potential to raise a lot of money.
